What DEF is, and why your engine insists on it

Diesel exhaust fluid is not a fuel additive and it does not go in the fuel tank. It has its own tank and its own job.

DEF is a precise blend — 32.5% urea, 67.5% deionized water — injected into the exhaust stream ahead of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. There it breaks down nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapor. That is how diesel engines meet EPA emissions limits without choking performance or fuel economy, which is why essentially every on-road diesel since 2010 and every Tier 4 Final off-road machine uses it.

Because it is an emissions control, the engine monitors it closely. Run the DEF tank low and you get dash warnings. Run it empty and the ECM cuts power, then limits road speed severely until DEF is added. There is no override. A truck that derates on a load, or an excavator that drops to a crawl mid-dig, costs far more than a scheduled DEF delivery.

DEF delivery sizes we stock

The right container depends on how much you burn. Buying DEF in jugs when you use totes' worth of it is one of the easiest places to waste money.

2.5-gallon jugs

Pickups, service trucks and single pieces of equipment

Sealed cases with a pour spout. Easiest option when you only burn a few gallons a month, or when you want spares in the truck for a long haul.

55-gallon drums

Small fleets and shops

Works with a drum pump or closed-transfer coupler. A good middle step once jugs start costing more in handling than they save in simplicity.

275-gallon totes (IBC)

Job sites, equipment yards and farms

The most common setup we deliver. We swap or refill totes on a schedule, and a closed transfer system keeps contamination out.

Bulk DEF

High-volume fleets and plant sites

Delivered straight into your own DEF storage tank. Lowest cost per gallon by a wide margin once your usage justifies the tank.

Who we deliver DEF to

Trucking & delivery fleets

Every on-road diesel truck built since 2010 runs SCR and needs DEF. We refill shop totes or bulk tanks so drivers are never hunting for DEF at a truck stop mid-route.

Construction equipment

Tier 4 Final excavators, loaders, dozers and telehandlers all take DEF. We deliver it to the job site alongside your off-road diesel, so it is one stop and one invoice.

Standby generators

Many newer diesel gensets need DEF to run without derating. We keep the DEF tank full as part of the same scheduled service that keeps the fuel tank full.

Agriculture

Newer tractors, combines and sprayers need DEF through planting and harvest. We bring it out to the farm with the dyed off-road diesel.

Handling, storage and shelf life

DEF is simple to live with once you know its three weaknesses: contamination, sustained heat, and the wrong container.

  • DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water, blended to the ISO 22241 standard. Nothing else belongs in it — not water from a hose, not fuel, not a dirty funnel.
  • Contamination is the main way DEF causes expensive problems. Even small amounts of diesel, dirt or the wrong metals can foul an SCR system and set a fault. We use dedicated DEF-only equipment on every delivery.
  • Shelf life is roughly 12 months stored between about 12°F and 86°F, and drops off the longer it sits above that. Sustained heat is what ages it, so a tote baking in the sun all August is the problem, not a cold snap.
  • DEF freezes at about 12°F and thaws with no loss of quality — it does not need to be thrown out. Vehicle DEF tanks are heated for exactly this reason.
  • It is mildly corrosive to some metals, including carbon steel and aluminum, which is why DEF equipment is stainless or specific plastics. Never store or transfer it in a steel drum meant for fuel.
  • Typical consumption runs about 2 to 3 gallons of DEF per 100 gallons of diesel. That ratio is the fastest way to size your storage and set a delivery schedule.

Where we deliver DEF

We run out of Lexington and cover the Midlands of South Carolina. DEF rides along with diesel on the same truck, so adding it to an existing delivery usually costs you nothing extra in trip charges.

Columbia, Lexington, West Columbia, Cayce, Gilbert, Irmo, Chapin, Batesburg-Leesville and the surrounding Lexington, Richland, Newberry and Fairfield county areas. If your site sits just outside that list, call anyway — we reach more of the Midlands than most people expect.

DEF delivery questions

Yes. We deliver diesel exhaust fluid throughout the Midlands of South Carolina — Lexington, Columbia, West Columbia, Cayce, Gilbert, Irmo, Chapin, Batesburg-Leesville and the surrounding counties. Call (803) 303-2641 with your location and volume and we will confirm scheduling.

2.5-gallon jugs by the case, 55-gallon drums, 275-gallon totes and bulk DEF pumped into your own storage tank. Most job sites and equipment yards land on totes; high-volume fleets save the most with bulk.

As a rule of thumb, roughly 2 to 3 gallons of DEF per 100 gallons of diesel burned, depending on the engine and how hard it works. If you tell us your monthly diesel volume we can size DEF storage and a delivery interval from it.

Yes, and that is how most of our customers buy it. One scheduled visit covers your diesel, your off-road diesel and your DEF, which saves you a separate delivery fee and a separate invoice.

Modern SCR-equipped engines don't simply ignore it. They warn, then derate power, and can drop to a severely limited speed until DEF is added. It is an emissions-compliance control, not a suggestion — which is why running DEF down to empty on a loaded truck or a working machine is an expensive way to save a delivery.

It has a shelf life of about 12 months when stored between roughly 12°F and 86°F. Sustained high heat shortens it. Freezing does not ruin DEF — it thaws back to spec. Keep totes out of direct summer sun and buy in volumes you will actually turn over.

No. SCR systems check DEF quality and concentration, and anything off-spec will set faults and can damage the system. DEF has to be ISO 22241 fluid at 32.5% urea. Diluting it or substituting anything else is far more expensive than buying it properly.

Yes. Job sites, equipment yards, farms, generator sites and remote locations are all normal DEF stops for us, usually on the same run as the diesel.
